Alness Bridge footbridge closure

Issued: 30 Nov 2024

A footbridge in Alness, which leads pupils and the public from the High Street to Alness Academy and the swimming pool, has been closed after faults were found during a structural examination.

Since the start of the contract on 15 November, the contractor has been undertaking opening out works to determine the structural condition of bridge. These have revealed that the condition of the bridge support elements is worse than anticipated. In the light of this, the engineers recommended closure of the bridge until these defects can be rectified.

A Council spokesman said: "Clearly the health and safety of bridge users is the most important aspect, and the bridge will therefore be closed until the repairs have been carried out. We regret any inconvenience caused to pupils, staff and the public."

Until further notice, pedestrian access to and from school will be by the Crawl Park and Main Drive path.

Pupils are reminded that they must walk on the path and not on the main drive and to use the recognised road crossings on their way to and from school.
