Harmonies of Dunbeath - free event for the whole family

Issued: 24 Aug 2010

An event which aims to encourage people from all walks of life to get out and about, enjoy their environment and learn about the wonderful local biodiversity takes place in Caithness on Saturday 4 September.

This free fun day out called 'Harmonies of Dunbeath' is organised by Caithness Biodiversity Group, with support from The Highland Council countryside rangers and sponsored by Scottish Natural Heritage. The event takes place at Dunbeath from 12 noon to 3pm.

The Dunbeath strath and old salmon bothy will be full of musical sounds when fiddle, bag pipe, clarsach and tin whistle players will bring the landscape alive. Storytellers will enhance the visitors experience by interpreting the wildlife and habitat of the local area. For younger visitors, children's treasure hunt, face painting, pebble painting and beach crafts are on offer. For all those taking part in the activities, Forestry Commission Scotland will be running a free venison burger barbeque.

Marina Swanson, Highland Council's East Caithness Ranger said: "We're very excited about 'Harmonies of Dunbeath' as it is something a little bit different from the usual 'biodiversity' themed event and fits in very nicely with the international year of Biodiversity. We want people to appreciate the beautiful habitats and wildlife of the area by getting out and about and enjoying themselves."

People should come prepared with stout footwear and appropriate outdoor clothing. Numbers may be limited so prior booking is essential by contacting 01847 821531 or e-mailing marina.swanson@highland.gov.uk before the end of August. Kind permission for running this event has been given by Dunbeath Estate.
