Superintendent David O’Connor, Area Commander,Inverness - Christmas Message

Issued: 18 Dec 2024

As 2024 draws to a close it has been another positive year in terms of policing and that is down to the positive support received at every level across our communities and as a result of the effective partnerships that have been established.

It is however the party season and I must remind everyone that, whilst the Police have a particular role to play in terms of community safety, everyone has a role to play in relation to their own individual safety and indeed the safety of others.

It is the festive season and I urge all partygoers, revellers and those out to enjoy themselves to do it safely and responsibly. My officers will be there to support our communities in celebrating Christmas and the New Year and this can be achieved through patience, tolerance and goodwill throughout.

There will always of course be an element who overstep the mark or indulge in criminal behaviour and these individuals are reminded that criminal conduct or anti-social behaviour will be dealt with swiftly and robustly to ensure that the silent majority can have a peaceful and tranquil festive season.

There will be increased visible policing over the next two weeks and we will target public order offences, public drunkenness, anti-social behaviour, drink driving, drugs misuse and violent crime.

The city centre is particularly busy at this time of the year with Christmas shoppers during the day and the night time economy places an additional demand on my officers due to the number of people attracted to the area. Disappointingly, there have been a number of violent incidents in the city centre in recent weeks and this will not be tolerated.
I have no doubt that my officers will once again rise to the challenges that face them over the festive season to ensure that individuals and communities across the area can enjoy all that is good about the city of Inverness.

A shortened version of the Area Commander’s Christmas Message has been posted on the Community Communication Network CCN or Community TV, as it is also known, as a public reassurance message.
