Issued: 5 Feb 2024
Northern Constabulary officers will be out in force tomorrow to take part in a nation-wide crackdown on speeding and the non wearing of seatbelts.
The day of enforcement comes on National No Speeding Day (6 February 2024) and officers will be pro-actively targeting speeding drivers those flouting the seatbelt laws from 7am until 7am the following morning.
Excessive speed is one of the major causes of accidents across the Force area and Police are reiterating their message that drivers should adhere to all speed limits at all times to reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured on our roads.
It is not only excessive speed which is of concern to Police but inappropriate speed based on current road and weather conditions.
In addition people who do not wear seatbelts are not only breaking the law but endangering their own lives. The message from Police is simple, "Seatbelts save lives."
Road Policing Inspector John Smith said: "Many people associate the dangers of speeding with travelling on motorways and trunk roads, however the fact is that excessive speeding can have serious consequences on all classes of roads.
"I would appeal to the public to think about their speed today and at all times and always be responsible, drive at an appropriate speed for the conditions prevailing at the time.
"A moment of thoughtlessness on the part of a driver can lead to a lifetime of grief for so many."
All eight operational areas, from Shetland and Orkney to the Western Isles and the mainland, will be carrying out speed checks throughout the 24-hour campaign.
