The Renal Unit at Raigmore Hospital, Inverness is to expand. Plans to build a completely new unit have been agreed and this will be built together with the Day Surgery Centre. The original plans to extend the existing building have been revised, which will minimize the disruption to renal services as work is undertaken.
Pressure on renal services is expected to continue to increase over the next few years. An interim relocation of office space into temporary accommodation will allow an increase in the number of dialysis stations within the existing unit.
Dr Rob Peel, Renal Consultant for NHS Highland, explains:
“Renal services at Raigmore Hospital have been under pressure for some time and the number of patients requiring dialysis continues to increase. We are committed to try to offer treatment as close to home as possible and it is hoped that in the coming months we will have up to four additional dialysis stations in the existing Renal Unit at Raigmore Hospital.
By creating this extra space internally, we hope that we can postpone the need for night shift dialysis and also avoid sending patients from the Inverness area to Fort William to dialyze. The revised plans result in the added bonus of minimizing disruption to dialysis patients whilst the building work is taking place. We will end up with a purpose built, state of the art facility for patients with kidney disease, including those receiving dialysis and those with kidney transplants.”
