People across the Highlands, Argyll and Bute are being invited to nominate individuals and teams for the NHS Highland Staff awards.

The Awards are now in their third year and were set up to pay tribute to the work of staff and volunteers who go the extra mile to improve health and patient care.

There are 10 award categories covering a wide range of health and wellbeing jobs including community staff, hospital staff, support workers, volunteers, mental health and patient or public publications. This year there is a Health Improvement category to highlight the work NHS staff are doing to promote health and prevent illness.

Director of Human Resources Anne Gent said: “We want to recognise staff who have gone the extra mile but many of these people are very modest so I am appealing to patients, colleagues and friends to sing their praises and nominate them for this year’s awards.”

Director of Public Health Dr. Eric Baijal said: “I’m delighted to see a new category for health improvement. Our staff are doing a lot of innovative work to reduce illness and save lives by encouraging people to adopt healthier lifestyles. I’m sure we will get a very high calibre of entry.”

Employee Director Ray Stewart said: “It’s all too easy to take for granted the enormous effort that NHS staff put in day after day to care for patients and continuously improve that care. These awards are an important opportunity to say thank you and I would encourage anyone who knows a deserving NHS employee or volunteer to fill out a nomination form.”

Last year’s Award winners included Barbara Oliphant, a community children’s nurse serving the Dunoon and Cowal area, Archie Moffat, a porter at Nairn Town and County Hospital and a team of speech and language therapists from Fort William who had changed a referral system in the face of growing demand for assessments in children.

Anyone can nominate an individual or team. Forms can be downloaded from our website or you can request one be sent to you in the post by phoning NHS Highland on 01463 717123 and asking for Communications. The closing date for entries is 15th August.
