New 1.5million extension to Stornoway police station opened

Issued: 20 Aug 2010

A new £1.5m extension to Stornoway Police Station was formally opened today by Convenor of the Northern Joint Police Board, Norman MacLeod and Northern Constabulary Chief Constable Ian Latimer.

The refurbishment and extension of Stornoway Police Station was identified for progression in the capital programme in 2006. The project cost just over £1.5 million and commenced on site in March 2009. It was completed within cost and within programme in April 2010.

The existing cell block had been identified as requiring major refurbishment to bring it up to an acceptable current standard and there was also a shortage of office accommodation in the rest of the station for ongoing operational requirements.

An option appraisal was carried out to investigate whether a new command centre on a new site would be more cost effective. The appraisal identified that there were no suitable alternative sites immediately available and those which may possibly be available in the future had development and location difficulties which made them less desirable and more expensive than a comprehensive upgrade of the existing facility.

In order to obtain the operational efficiency of the Area Command Centre it was necessary to progress the project in three phases which were completed in April 2010.

Chief constable Ian Latimer said: “It is a privilege for me to be here in Stornoway today at the opening of a newly refurbished and extended Police Station in your community.

"It is this type of event that continues to show Northern Constabulary’s dedication and pride in our community based policing approach which I believe contributes to our consistently high level of detection and low levels of crime.

"The Northern Joint Police Board and I are committed to the ethos of community policing and the community of Stornoway, as well as the wider area it serves, deserves a quality service and modern sustainable assets that support Police service delivery. This ideal is well understood by us and by the Northern Joint Police Board whose investment in the refurbishment and extension of this Police Station recognises the importance of the Police in this community.

"This is an impressive facility and as well as continuing to bring service access to the community, it provides an excellent workplace for the Officers working here.”

Area Commander Chief Inspector Gordon MacLeod said: "As Area Command Headquarters for the Western Isles, this newly refurbished and extended station will provide a first class facility to allow our staff to maintain the delivery of effective and efficient community policing, not only in Stornoway, but in all the communities we serve."
