Highland Youth Convener to represent Scotland on International Stage

Issued: 22 Jul 2024

Highland Youth Convener, Magnus Monahan, has been selected as one of Scotland's 10 delegates to attend the World Youth Congress in Istanbul, Turkey. The two-week long congress, which starts on Saturday 31 July, will include a mix of workshops and debates on a range of topics such as poverty, climate change, peace, democracy and human rights. The programme also includes fours days of local actions projects all across Turkey. This will be the 5th World Youth Congress; the event was first held in Hawaii in 1999 and has also been hosted by Morocco, Scotland and Canada.

Magnus said: "I'm really excited about getting involved in this amazing opportunity. The programme looks excellent but most of all I'm looking forward to meeting the other young people from across the globe."

The Scots will be joined by 1,000 other Young People in the European Capital of Culture and the hosts will be laying on a series of cultural and social events during the evenings. Scotland's delegation is being supported by the Scottish Government and Scottish Youth Parliament and as a previous host nation Scotland has been asked to deliver a presentation at the opening ceremony and to run a workshop.
