The Hate Free Highland campaign aims to encourage reporting of incidents based on discrimination or prejudice in the Highlands and raise awareness of the devastating impact these incidents can have on the lives of individuals or groups.
A hate incident is any form of abuse on the grounds of age, gender, disability, religion or belief, race or ethnic origin, sexual orientation, or social background. In some cases it may be a criminal offence. This is a local as well as a national problem. In Highland, we have been told that one in four disabled people have been harassed or bullied because of their disability
This type of prejudice and discrimination can have a devastating effect upon victims. We want to encourage people to report incidents and send a strong message that hate incidents and crimes are not acceptable in the Highlands.
This campaign gives people a route to report any hate incident that has happened to them or any incident they have witnessed. Each report received helps to build a picture of Hate Incidents in Highland. This helps all the public agencies to respond to recurring incidents and can also lead to prosecutions.
